South Africa owns the oldest archeological and fossil sites in the world, and some of them have been recovered from a several caves in Gauteng province that it also is a UNESCO world heritage site and cradle of Humankind.
The site includes Sterkfontein wich is one of the richest hominin fossil sites in the world. Sterkfontein is a set of livestone caves that is located in Gauteng Province and it is the place where you can find the archeological sites of Swartkrans and Kromdraai. Numerous early hominin remains have been found at the site over the last few decades. These have been attributed to Australophitecus , early Homo and Paranthropus .
The first hominin found was the Taung Child in 1924. several hominin species existed in South Africa from about three millions years ago starting with Austrolopithecus Africanus and were succeded by various species like the Australopithecus Aidiba, Homo ergaster, Homo erectus, Homo sapiens , etc.
